The Republic of Palau, traditionally known as Belau, is a sovereign island nation located in the Micronesian subregion of Oceania. Comprising approximately 340 islands, atolls, and islets, Palau is a Small Island Developing State whose identity, culture, and future are deeply rooted in the ocean.

Although Palau’s total land area spans just 460 square kilometres, its Exclusive Economic Zone extends across approximately 600,000 square kilometres, reflecting the nation’s vast maritime stewardship and long-standing commitment to the sustainable management of ocean resources. Palau is home to a population of approximately 18,000 people.

Palau regained its independence on 1 October 1994 and became a Member State of the United Nations on 15 December 1994. Since joining the Organization, Palau has been an active and principled voice in multilateral diplomacy, consistently advocating for ocean conservation, climate action, sustainable development, and the protection of the interests of Small Island Developing States. 

In recognition of its leadership within the global community of small island nations, Palau currently serves as Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), helping to advance collective priorities and strengthen the resilience and voice of vulnerable island countries in international decision-making.

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Palau to the United Nations, based in New York, represents Palau in its engagement with the United Nations system and the wider international community. The Mission is currently led by Her Excellency Ilana V. Seid, Permanent Representative.
