As a follow up to the SIDS Energy Transition stocktaking meeting on May 24th 2019 convened
by the Mission of Palau together with the Co-Chairs of the Energy Transition Working Group, Denmark and Ethiopia, and the SG’s Climate Action Summit team, the Palau Mission convened a pre-Abu Dhabi gathering of SIDS on the 21st of June.
An Ambitious SIDS Energy Transition Deliverable for the Climate Summit was presented by H.E. Ms. Ngedikes Olai Uludong, Permanent Representative of Palau to the UN. An update on the work of the Energy Transition Working Group was presented by the Co-Chairs of the Energy Transition Working Group and the UN SG’s Climate Action Team. The UN SG’s Action Team/ UAE UN Mission discussed the expectations for Abu Dhabi.
Due to SIDS having multiple ministers for different government divisions, issues/ questions were raised as to specifying which minister will be sent for the Abu Dhabi climate summit for the Energy Transition Deliverable.
The zero draft concept for the SIDs Energy Transition deliverable as prepared by the Palau Mission with assistance from the Energy Coalition track and supporting partner agencies was circulated following the meeting. This updated document will be presented to SIDS delegations in attendance at Abu Dhabi and used as a guide to develop a concrete SIDS deliverable on Energy Transition to be announced at the Climate Summit.
